The Ledger Independent 2.1

Despite its relatively young age of 42 years, The Ledger-Independent, Maysville’s daily newspaper, boasts a rich history that extends back over 150 years.

Originally published on October 1, 1968, The Ledger-Independent emerged from the simultaneous buyout of the city’s two long-standing newspapers, The Public Ledger and The Daily Independent, by the Gadsden (Ala.) Times Publishing Corporation.

The newly formed Maysville Publishing Corporation, with James M. Striplin, the former business manager of Gadsden Times, at the helm as president and publisher, initially maintained the afternoon edition of The Public Ledger while producing a morning edition under the combined masthead of both titles.

By early 1969, the publishing strategy evolved to feature a single morning edition six days a week, fully branded as The Ledger-Independent.

Both predecessor papers were family-owned enterprises that contributed significantly to local journalism.

Situated in a vibrant seven-county region spanning northern Kentucky and southern Ohio, The Ledger-Independent has experienced considerable growth in both quality and reach over the past four decades, adeptly addressing the community's expanding needs.

The newspaper has embraced advancements in technology and newsgathering practices, implementing computer networks for various functions such as news reporting, advertising, photo scanning, and layout pagination.

Furthermore, it launched its website, www.maysville-online.com, in 1996, which has since become a primary source for online news and information in the Buffalo Trace area. In addition to its web platform, The Ledger-Independent actively engages with its audience through social media channels like Facebook and Twitter to disseminate news content effectively.
